Optical gas imaging (OGI) uses a tuned infrared camera so a technician can see hydrocarbon gas plumes that have no visible vapor. It is a leak-detection method, not a process unit. Surveys walk wellheads, tanks, compressors, and piping looking for fugitive emissions.

OGI is widely used in LDAR programs under EPA OOOOa/b/c and in voluntary methane work. Camera choice, survey speed, and whether the leak is repaired are what make the method useful. A camera in a truck that never gets used on the route does not reduce emissions.
